Writer Gideon Hodge ran past firefighters to save a laptop containing two novels that were not backed up. The author emerges from his home after a minute soaking wet and holding a backpack that contained his laptop.
Hodge told Fox News “Despite my better sense, I just ran inside and grabbed it. I didn’t think to be scared.” He also explained the bag with the laptop had been under a table. That location kept it from getting damaged by heat or water.
As someone who has work in the fire service, I would not suggest running into a burning building without proper gear. Mr. Hodge got lucky.
I once responded to a fire scene where a homeowner ran in after a family pet and was killed. Heat and smoke are easy to underestimate just how deadly they can be.
